Square 3
The Prestonville Tunnel

Designed and made by Josephine Gobey

Jo has lived in the area for 16 years and is a keen needlewoman. Jo decided to depict the Prestonville Tunnel and the railway line that are at the end of her garden in York Villas.

"The tunnel was built in 1870 when the line to Portsmouth was constructed. I decided to contrast a train of that period with a present day locomotive showing the old train disappearing into the tunnel and the modern one coming out to meet the Year 2000. I drew the design by eye and constructed it using a pieced patchwork method with fabrics from my scrap bag. It took me about two weeks to finish" .
